The launching ceremony of Pakistan’s inaugural Hangor-class submarine at the Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group’s Shuangliu Base marks a significant milestone in bolstering the nation’s defense capabilities. Notably, China is spearheading the construction of this submarine for the Pakistan Navy. Attended by Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Naveed Ashraf, the event underscores a vital agreement between the two nations, wherein China has committed to providing Pakistan with a total of eight state-of-the-art submarines.
Under the Transfer of Technology (ToT) pact, four submarines will be manufactured by WSIG, while the remaining quartet will be produced at KS&EW. Outfitted with advanced stealth attributes, these submarines will feature cutting-edge weaponry and sensor systems, enabling them to operate effectively in diverse threat scenarios and engage targets from considerable distances.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, CNS Ashraf emphasized the paramountcy of maritime security in the prevailing geostrategic milieu, reiterating the navy’s steadfast dedication to upholding regional tranquility. He underscored that the Hangor-class S/M Project epitomizes the enduring Pak-China camaraderie and underscores robust military collaboration between the two nations.
Pakistan’s commencement of the construction of the sixth Hangor-class submarine at KS&EW earlier in February 2024 further solidifies the strong military rapport between Pakistan and China. The induction of two newly built Chinese Type 054 A/P frigates into the Pakistan Navy last year further attests to the close military cooperation between the two allies.
