Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi was honoured with the prestigious Hilal-e-Imtiaz during a special civil awards ceremony held at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad. President Asif Ali Zardari presented the award in recognition of Afridi’s remarkable contributions and services to the field of sports, particularly cricket, where he represented Pakistan for many years and earned admiration both nationally and internationally.
The ceremony was attended by senior political leaders, government officials, members of civil society, and notable personalities from different sectors. The event highlighted the state’s appreciation for individuals who have made significant contributions to Pakistan through their achievements, dedication, and public service.
During the ceremony, President Zardari also posthumously conferred the Nishan-e-Imtiaz upon veteran politician Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan. The award recognised his decades-long struggle for democracy and his role in promoting democratic values and political stability in the country. His son, Nawabzada Iftikhar Ahmad, received the honour on behalf of the late political leader.
In addition, former senator and senior political figure Irfan Siddiqui was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz for his notable contributions to literature, journalism, and public service. The award was accepted by his son, Imran Khawar Siddiqui, during the ceremony.
The event also paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of the armed forces. Pakistan Army soldier Azhar Mahmood received the Hilal-e-Shujaat in recognition of his exceptional courage and acts of bravery performed in service to the nation.
The civil awards ceremony reflected a strong message of national appreciation and unity, as individuals from diverse backgrounds, including sports, politics, literature, and the military, were recognised for their valuable contributions to Pakistan.
