Dr. Shamshad Akhtar Takes Charge as Caretaker Finance Minister

Upon her arrival at the Finance Ministry, she was warmly greeted by the Secretary Finance and senior officials of the Ministry. Subsequently, the Secretary Finance and his team provided a comprehensive briefing on the country’s economic situation and the trends of major financial and economic indicators.

In assuming her new responsibilities, Dr. Akhtar conveyed her unwavering commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline, fostering investment, and intensifying efforts to tackle income inequality.

It is noteworthy that Dr. Akhtar had previously served as the Finance Minister in the caretaker government preceding the 2018 general election. She had also held the position of the governor of the State Bank of Pakistan from January 2, 2006, for a three-year term, marking her as the first woman to lead Pakistan’s central bank.

As the interim finance minister, Dr. Akhtar is poised to navigate significant challenges in the lead-up to the elections, which are expected to be postponed.
