TikTok Joins Twitter and Threads with Text-Only Posts Competition

Share

TikTok has made a significant update to its platform by introducing text-only posts, a departure from its usual focus on short videos. This move follows recent changes in the social media landscape, such as Twitter’s rebranding to ‘X’ and Meta’s launch of the text-based app Threads. Although the update was officially announced in a blog post on Monday night, some users claim to have had access to this feature since June during an early testing phase.

In their blog post, TikTok explained that the new text posts allow users to showcase their written creativity, which was previously seen in comments, captions, and videos, in a dedicated space. Unlike the traditional TikTok format with videos and photos, text posts don’t have a specific name but offer a way for users to share content without visuals.

Before this update, users could add text to their video and image posts, as well as include it in captions and comments. Some even created text-only posts by sharing screenshots of text-centered content from external sources. With the new feature, text posts can be personalized with music, background colors, stickers, and tags, similar to video and photo posts.

The character limit for text posts is 1,000, while video descriptions and comments retain their existing character restrictions at 2,200 and 150 characters, respectively, as confirmed by a TikTok spokesperson.
