EonHoldings, often noted for its critical stance toward the government, has once again come under scrutiny after reports emerged that one of its researchers, Saad Riaz, was taken into custody by the Punjab Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) during a late-night operation over alleged links to the banned group Al-Qaeda.
The CTD has registered an FIR against Riaz, accusing him of connections with the militant network once led by Osama bin Laden and claiming he was attempting to recruit individuals for the organization.
According to officials, Riaz was arrested from Masjid Hanfia Ghousia while allegedly distributing banned material and promoting extremist views. Authorities further stated that a membership card associated with Al-Qaeda was recovered from him during the operation.
However, the case has sparked controversy, with conflicting narratives emerging. Some journalists have disputed the official account, claiming that Riaz was not detained at the mosque but was instead picked up from his home several days earlier. They allege that CCTV footage from the residence supports this version, although it has not been independently verified.
These contradictions have raised concerns among observers, who question how such open recruitment activity could take place without immediate resistance in a public setting.
Individuals close to Riaz have rejected the allegations, describing him as a researcher and academic rather than a militant sympathizer. They highlight his work on conflict zones such as Kashmir, Gaza, Afghanistan, and Syria, particularly focusing on narrative warfare and information dynamics.
Riaz’s family has confirmed that they are pursuing the matter through legal means, expressing confidence in the judicial system and stating that due process will prevail, while refraining from further comments due to ongoing proceedings.
Meanwhile, CTD officials have yet to address the growing concerns, including questions surrounding the timing and location of the arrest.
Riaz remains in judicial custody as the case continues, attracting widespread attention online and sparking debate over actions against dissent.
