Goods Transporters Raise Freight Charges by Up to 40%

Goods Transporters have increased freight charges by up to 40 percent after five consecutive fuel price hikes.

The increase has raised concerns about higher transportation costs across the country. It may also affect the prices of several essential goods.

Container transport rates from Karachi to Peshawar have crossed Rs. 900,000. Local and intercity transport operators have also increased their fares.

Their charges have reportedly gone up by as much as 27 percent. Transporters say rising fuel costs have increased their operating expenses.

The latest fuel price increases have added further pressure on the transport sector. High-speed diesel reached Rs. 403 per litre during the week.

Petrol prices also rose to around Rs. 376 per litre. Diesel is widely used by heavy vehicles and goods transport trucks.

Higher diesel prices directly increase the cost of long-distance freight operations. Transporters must also cover vehicle maintenance and other operating expenses.

The increase in freight charges could affect the supply chain. Food items, vegetables and fruits are among the goods transported across cities.

Higher transportation costs can increase the overall cost of moving these products. This could eventually put additional pressure on consumers.

Authorities have started reviewing the increased transport fares. The Rawalpindi Regional Transport Authority has called a meeting with transporters.

The meeting will discuss the recently increased fares and related concerns. The authority has also ordered action against operators charging unapproved rates.

The move aims to ensure that transporters follow officially approved fare structures. It may also help prevent unreasonable fare increases.

Meanwhile, the All Pakistan Goods Transport Owners Association has warned of a strong reaction.

The association has urged the government to reverse the latest fuel price increases. It has linked the higher freight charges to repeated fuel hikes.

Goods Transporters are now facing increased costs across their operations. Any further rise in fuel prices could create additional pressure.

The situation remains a concern for businesses dependent on road transportation. Manufacturers, traders and retailers may also face higher logistics costs.

The impact could become more visible if increased freight rates continue for an extended period. Authorities and transport representatives are expected to discuss the issue further.
