A severe Heatwave alert has been issued across Punjab by PDMA ahead of the Eidul Azha holidays, with authorities warning that temperatures are expected to remain extremely high from May 25 to May 31.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, a strong high-pressure system is likely to form in the upper atmosphere on May 25 and become stronger the following day. This weather system is expected to increase temperatures across many parts of Punjab well above normal levels.
In northern and central districts such as Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Gujrat, Narowal, Okara, Kasur, and Jhelum, daytime temperatures may rise 5 to 7 degrees Celsius above average. Authorities expect temperatures in these areas to range between 42°C and 45°C.
Meanwhile, southern districts including Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Bhakkar, Layyah, Kot Addu, Jhang, Sahiwal, and Khanewal could experience even more intense heat. Temperatures in these regions may reach between 47°C and 50°C during the warning period. Officials also stated that nighttime temperatures are expected to stay unusually high.
PDMA has advised residents to take precautionary measures during the heatwave, especially children, elderly people, and women. Citizens have been urged to avoid going outside unnecessarily between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., drink plenty of water, and stay away from direct sunlight for long periods.
Farmers have also been instructed to carefully manage crops and livestock during the extreme weather conditions. Authorities expect higher electricity and water consumption during the heatwave period.
District administrations and emergency departments across Punjab have been directed to remain on alert around the clock. Officials have also been asked to coordinate closely with PDMA and spread heatwave safety awareness through television, radio, and social media platforms.
