Government Raises Diesel Levy to Rs80 Per Litre

The federal government has increased the petroleum levy on high-speed diesel by Rs1.72 per litre.

The increase has taken the diesel levy to the maximum Rs80 per litre under commitments made under the International Monetary Fund programme.

The petroleum levy on petrol has been retained at Rs80 per litre.

In addition to the petroleum levy, the government continues to charge a climate support levy of Rs5 per litre on both petrol and diesel.

The latest increase comes as the government weighs measures to provide relief to consumers amid pressure over petroleum prices.

The government is seeking to meet its fiscal commitments while also trying to limit the impact of higher fuel prices on consumers.

Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said on Wednesday that the government was making every possible effort to address public concerns over fuel prices.

Malik said oil refineries were prepared to reduce petroleum prices by between Rs20 and Rs32 per litre.

He added that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority would announce its decision on petroleum product prices shortly.

“We will make every possible effort to resolve the problems faced by the public,” the petroleum minister said.

Malik also said the government was taking steps to ensure adequate crude oil storage in the country.

He said he would personally visit refineries in Karachi next week to assess the situation.

The minister said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had directed relevant authorities to take necessary measures in view of the prevailing situation.

Malik assured the public that the government would continue working to address concerns related to fuel prices.

The latest levy adjustment comes as consumers remain under pressure from changes in petroleum prices.

The government is also monitoring the supply and storage situation to ensure adequate availability of petroleum products.

Authorities are expected to announce the latest petroleum prices after OGRA completes its review.

The final impact on consumers will depend on the upcoming decision regarding petrol and diesel prices.
