Sindh Culture and Tourism Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah has claimed that the federal government rejected the nominations of leading Pakistani actors Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa for the prestigious Sitara-e-Imtiaz award.
Speaking at the opening of the eight-day Wes-Dhaari Sindhi Theatre Festival 2026 in Karachi, the minister said the Sindh Culture Department had nominated both actors for the national honour on two separate occasions.
According to Shah, the nominations were recommended by a committee comprising prominent personalities. However, he claimed that the federal government did not approve the recommendations and did not provide a reason for rejecting them.
Mahira and Fahad Nominated Twice
The Sindh minister said Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa were nominated twice for the Sitara-e-Imtiaz because of their contributions to Pakistan’s entertainment industry.
He questioned why the two prominent actors from Sindh had not received federal recognition despite their popularity and contribution to the country’s cultural image.
Shah said the matter raised questions about how artists are selected for national honours and whether performers from Sindh are receiving adequate recognition at the federal level.
The minister’s comments have brought renewed attention to the process through which national awards are recommended and approved.
Sindh Artists Gaining International Recognition
Zulfiqar Ali Shah also highlighted the growing international presence of artists from Sindh.
He said performers from the province have established themselves not only across Pakistan but also in countries including India and nations in the Gulf region.
According to the minister, Pakistani artists have played an important role in promoting the country’s culture and identity internationally.
He particularly praised Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa for their contributions to the entertainment industry and their ability to represent Pakistan on international platforms.
Minister Calls for Greater Recognition
The Sindh culture minister urged the federal government to give greater attention to the country’s artists and cultural sector.
He said artists have contributed significantly to Pakistan’s cultural identity and helped promote a positive image of the country.
Shah argued that performers who achieve success nationally and internationally should receive appropriate recognition for their contributions.
He reiterated that Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa had been nominated twice for the Sitara-e-Imtiaz but were ultimately not selected.
The minister said the situation highlights the need for stronger federal support for Pakistan’s artists and greater recognition of their contribution to the country’s cultural and entertainment landscape.
