Latest Remarks By Bilawal Bhutto Regarding Future PM of Pakistan

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, the Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), appeared to make a veiled comment about Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), stating that the people of Pakistan will not select a Prime Minister from Lahore this time.

Interestingly, Bilawal’s statement came shortly after reports of a phone call between his father, Asif Ali Zardari, and Nawaz Sharif, where Zardari congratulated Sharif on his return to Pakistan.

Speaking to the media at Gizri’s Football Stadium in Karachi, Bilawal emphasized that the recent local by-election victories in Karachi were a preview of the PPP’s success in the upcoming general elections in February 2024.

He stressed that the PPP was well-positioned to address the country’s problems, including economic challenges, poverty, and inflation, claiming that only a PPP-led government could effectively handle issues related to poverty reduction and employment.

Regarding the reported phone call between his father and Sharif, Bilawal confirmed it but noted that it was old news, highlighting the importance of keeping the door open for negotiations. He downplayed the significance of the conversation, suggesting that it was a routine exercise in politics.

Bilawal stated that the PPP would engage with all political parties to address the country’s challenges and expressed confidence in winning the upcoming elections. He also expressed the PPP’s ambition to form governments at the federal, local, and provincial levels, with the upcoming election on February 8 confirming the party’s strength.

Bilawal asserted that this time, the Prime Minister of Pakistan would not come from Lahore.

He also criticized President Arif Alvi for alleged violations of the Constitution, stating that the PPP had long called for his resignation. However, he acknowledged that the Constitution allowed the president to remain in office until the Electoral College was completed, referring to Alvi’s term, which expired in September 2023. As the general elections are approaching for national and provincial assemblies, the president could continue to serve his term until the new assemblies are formed.
