The Punjab government has widened its actions against smog and air pollution by targeting wedding venues across the province. After enforcing rules on restaurants, authorities have now decided to seal wedding halls, banquet halls, and marquees that violate environmental laws.
Officials from the Punjab Environment Department said the move aims to reduce smoke emissions during the ongoing smog season. Smoke from live cooking and barbecues at wedding events has been identified as a major pollution source. Authorities say such emissions can no longer be ignored.
To address the issue, the department has made suction hoods mandatory for all wedding venues. These devices help remove smoke produced during cooking activities. The rule applies to wedding halls, banquet halls, and marquees without exception.
According to officials, all venues have been given time to comply. The final deadline for installing suction hoods is January 31. After this date, inspection teams will begin visits. Strict enforcement action will follow immediately.
Punjab Environment Director General Imran Hamid Sheikh said smoke from live cooking is a serious violation of smog control laws. He described it as an environmental crime under existing regulations. He warned that any venue operating without a suction hood will be considered in clear violation of the law.
Authorities have announced zero tolerance for non-compliance. Wedding halls found ignoring the directive will face immediate sealing. Legal action will also be taken against owners. Heavy fines will be imposed under Punjab’s environmental protection laws.
The DG clarified that the policy will be enforced across all districts. The action is not limited to Lahore alone. Inspection teams have already received instructions to ensure full compliance.
Officials stressed that environmental protection is a top priority during the smog season. Poor air quality has affected public health across Punjab. Authorities believe reducing smoke from commercial activities can help improve air conditions.
The government has urged wedding hall owners to cooperate. Officials advised venue managers to complete installations before the deadline. They warned that excuses will not be accepted after inspections begin.
