The Punjab government has announced a province-wide plan to build wastewater treatment plants in every city. The project aims to modernize water supply and sanitation systems while improving public health and environmental protection.
The announcement was made by Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb during the Punjab Assembly’s budget session. She said the government is investing in long-term infrastructure projects to improve civic services across Punjab.
According to the minister, underground water supply and sewerage pipelines that have been in use for more than 70 years are being replaced. Upgrading these aging systems is expected to improve water distribution and reduce infrastructure problems in many cities.
The large-scale development program will cover 84 cities across the province. It includes the construction of wastewater treatment plants, modern sewerage networks, underground water storage tanks, and recharge wells. These projects are designed to improve groundwater resources and strengthen water management.
Aurangzeb said the government considers clean water and proper sanitation essential for sustainable urban development. The new infrastructure is expected to improve living conditions while supporting better environmental standards.
The minister also shared updates on the expansion of Water and Sanitation Agencies (WASA). She said WASA is now operating in 41 districts across Punjab. These agencies are responsible for improving water supply and sanitation services in urban areas.
To strengthen municipal services, the provincial government has provided more than 1,500 machines to local government institutions. These machines will help improve cleaning operations, sewerage maintenance, and other public services.
The government is also working on clean drinking water projects worth Rs. 42 billion. These projects are underway in Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, and nearby areas. They are expected to improve access to safe drinking water for thousands of residents.
Aurangzeb said nearly 5,800 water filtration plants are already serving communities across the province. These facilities continue to provide clean drinking water in both urban and rural areas.
During the budget session, the minister also announced that the Sargodha Cardiology Hospital is expected to open in the first week of July. Construction work and equipment installation have been completed.
The government is also expanding its Model Villages Program. Around 2,400 villages will receive improved water supply, sanitation, and sewerage facilities under the initiative. The program aims to improve basic services in rural communities.
