The federal government has approved the extension of the Murree Expressway by 70 kilometres to Muzaffarabad as part of its efforts to improve road connectivity and provide modern transportation facilities to the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The project is expected to enhance regional connectivity by offering a faster, safer, and more efficient travel route between Murree and Muzaffarabad.
The decision was made during a special meeting of the National Highway Authority (NHA) chaired by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan. Senior officials reviewed ongoing infrastructure projects and discussed strategies to improve the country’s road network while accelerating the completion of key development initiatives.
Speaking during the meeting, Abdul Aleem Khan said the proposed Muzaffarabad Expressway would provide residents of Azad Kashmir with travel facilities comparable to those available on the Murree Expressway. He said the extension would significantly improve road safety, reduce travel time, and make journeys more comfortable for commuters, tourists, and commercial transport.
The communications minister also directed the National Highway Authority to focus on completing ongoing development schemes before launching new projects. He instructed the authority to prioritize efficiency and ensure that 25 priority infrastructure projects are completed during the current fiscal year to improve the national highway network and strengthen transportation infrastructure.
During the meeting, Abdul Aleem Khan emphasized the need to enhance the financial performance of the National Highway Authority. He said his vision is to transform the NHA into a financially sustainable institution capable of generating between Rs300 billion and Rs400 billion in annual revenue through improved management, infrastructure development, and better utilization of national highway assets.
The proposed expressway extension is expected to improve accessibility for residents of Azad Jammu and Kashmir while supporting tourism, trade, and economic activity in the region. Officials believe the project will strengthen regional connectivity and contribute to the government’s broader efforts to modernize Pakistan’s transport infrastructure through high-quality road development and improved public services.
