CM Gandapur Approaches PHC for PTI Recognition

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has filed a writ petition in the Peshawar High Court (PHC) demanding PTI recognition as a political party. This legal move comes amid growing concerns about the status of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the country’s political landscape.

The petition names the federal government, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), and other related institutions as respondents. It specifically challenges Section 94(4) of the Election Rules 2017. According to the petitioner, this rule conflicts with the broader provisions of the Election Act 2017.

Gandapur’s legal team argues that PTI remains an active and functioning political party. The party currently holds a majority in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. Despite this, the ECP removed PTI from the list of recognized political parties, citing the lack of an electoral symbol.

The absence of an election symbol has serious implications. Without it, PTI candidates cannot contest elections under a unified banner. This, according to the petition, directly undermines democratic principles and voter representation.

The case has drawn national attention. Legal experts and political observers are closely watching how the PHC responds. The outcome may significantly impact the upcoming elections and the future of party-based politics in Pakistan.

Supporters of PTI see this petition as a crucial step toward restoring the party’s position. On the other hand, critics argue that legal technicalities must be respected regardless of political influence.

The Peshawar High Court is expected to schedule hearings soon. Until then, the debate over PTI recognition continues to dominate political discussions in the country.
