Pakistan’s Power Generation Hits Highest Level in Four Years

Pakistan’s Power Generation Hits 48-Month High in April 2025 Amid Tariff Cuts

ISLAMABAD – Power generation in Pakistan surged by 22% year-on-year in April 2025, reaching 10,513 GWh — the highest monthly output in 48 months, according to data shared by Arif Habib Limited (AHL).

The significant rise in electricity generation was primarily attributed to increased demand following reductions in power tariffs. However, overall generation during the first 10 months of FY25 (10MFY25) slightly declined by 0.4% YoY to 100,661 GWh, keeping it aligned with the reference level.

Fuel Mix Performance in April 2025:
  • Local coal-based generation increased by 73% YoY to 1,525 GWh
  • Imported coal-based generation skyrocketed 50.2x to 1,054 GWh
  • Wind power generation rose 67% YoY
  • Solar power generation edged up 2% YoY
  • Nuclear generation increased by 73% YoY
  • Gas-based generation declined by 14% YoY
  • RLNG-based generation remained unchanged
Rising Costs Despite Growth

Despite higher output, the cost of power generation rose by 8% YoY to Rs. 9.92/kWh in April, remaining above the reference cost. Over 10MFY25, the average fuel cost stood at Rs. 8.78/kWh, showing a slight decline of 0.1% from 10MFY24.

The figures suggest that while renewable and coal-based sources drove the production surge, cost pressures remain a challenge for the sector.
