In a proactive move ahead of Eidul Azha, the Livestock Department has announced the establishment of veterinary health camps across all 12 livestock markets in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The initiative aims to detect and prevent the spread of the Congo virus among sacrificial animals.
These camps, staffed with veterinary doctors and support teams, will begin operations on May 25, starting with the main cattle market at Bhatta Chowk. Every sacrificial animal — including camels, cows, bulls, calves, goats, and sheep — will undergo health screening. Sick, weak, or malnourished animals will be removed and barred from sale.

In addition to disease detection, on-site treatment will be provided for animals suffering from heat stress or other conditions. Livestock officers will personally inspect each animal, and buyers may request health certificates confirming their animal’s fitness.
Director of Agriculture Shahid Iftikhar confirmed that dedicated medical teams are being formed, and health stalls are being set up district-wide. Strict action will be taken against vendors trying to sell unfit or infected animals. While the main market has been inaugurated, the full influx of animals is expected within the next 8 to 10 days as public footfall steadily rises.
