Babar Azam’s tenure as the world’s top-ranked ODI batter has come to an end, as India’s young talent, Shubman Gill, has now claimed the top position in the latest ICC Men’s Batting Rankings.
Gill’s ascent to the top spot occurred on the back of his impressive performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, where he emerged as the No.1 ODI batter, making him only the fourth player from India to achieve this distinction, following the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli.
Gill’s remarkable journey to the pinnacle included notable scores of 92 against Sri Lanka and 23 against South Africa over the past week, accumulating a total of 219 runs from six innings during the tournament. In contrast, Babar Azam, who held the top position for over two years, has now slipped to the second spot, trailing Gill by six rating points.

This shift in the rankings is part of a significant upheaval within the top 10 positions of both the batting and bowling ODI lists, largely due to standout performances at the World Cup. India’s star players have made a profound impact, with Gill achieving the No.1 rank for the first time in his relatively short but impressive career.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has surged three places to fourth and is now just one rating point away from the third-placed South African, Quinton de Kock, thanks to his remarkable 543 runs at the World Cup. Shreyas Iyer has also made an impressive leap, climbing 17 places to reach the 18th position on the ODI batting list. In addition, Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman and Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran have made substantial progress, rising to the 11th and 12th spots, respectively.
In the ODI bowling rankings, the top positions look drastically different from the start of the World Cup, with four Indian bowlers now positioned within the top 10, reflecting their unbeaten start to the 50-over event.
Mohammed Siraj has reclaimed the No.1 rank among ODI bowlers, moving up two places. His teammates Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami have also surged up the rankings, securing positions within the top 10. South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj has risen two spots to second place, and Australia’s Adam Zampa is now in third place after climbing six spots. The former No.1 ODI bowler, Shaheen Afridi, has dropped four places, sharing the fifth spot with Josh Hazlewood.
The leading wicket-taker at the World Cup, Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka, has jumped 31 places to secure the 45th position on the ODI bowlers’ list. Additionally, India’s Ravindra Jadeja and South Africa’s Marco Jansen have made significant advancements, moving up eight and nine places, respectively, to reach the 19th and joint 24th positions.
Despite his early exit from the World Cup due to injury, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan maintains his position as the No.1 ranked all-rounder. Meanwhile, Australia’s Glenn Maxwell has improved two places to sixth in the all-rounder rankings after his match-winning performance against Afghanistan in Mumbai.
