According to reports, Mike Smith is expected to officially take charge once the recruitment process is completed. His appointment is part of the PCB’s efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s coaching staff ahead of an important overseas assignment.
Mike Smith is a Level 4-qualified cricket coach with experience in both domestic and franchise cricket. He has previously worked with the Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), giving him valuable knowledge of Pakistan’s cricket environment and several national players.
His experience in the PSL is considered an advantage as he is already familiar with the country’s cricket structure. The board hopes his coaching expertise will help improve Pakistan’s batting performances in Test cricket.
Since April 2026, former Pakistan batter Asad Shafiq has been serving as the team’s interim batting coach. He joined the coaching setup under Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed after taking over the temporary role.
The PCB started its search for a permanent batting coach in May. The board invited applications from qualified candidates through a public recruitment process. Interested applicants were asked to submit their applications before the deadline of June 7.
Following the closing date, the PCB began reviewing applications and assessing candidates for the position. Mike Smith has now emerged as the leading candidate for the role.
Pakistan will soon travel to England for a three-match Test series. The opening Test is scheduled to be played at Headingley in Leeds from August 19 to August 23.
The second Test will take place at Lord’s from August 27 to August 31. The third and final match of the series will be played at Edgbaston in Birmingham from September 9 to September 13.
The series is expected to provide a significant challenge for Pakistan as they face England in away conditions. Strong batting performances will be important if the visitors hope to compete successfully throughout the series.
