Former Islamabad Police chief Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi is set to take charge as Director General of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), according to sources familiar with the development.
Rizvi previously served as Inspector General of Islamabad Police after assuming the position in April 2024. During his tenure, he was responsible for overseeing policing, security and law-and-order operations across the federal capital.
His transfer comes as part of a broader reshuffle involving Islamabad’s policing and cybercrime investigation structure. Captain (Retd.) Sohail Chaudhry has been appointed as his replacement and is set to take charge as the new Islamabad Police chief.
Rizvi’s move to the NCCIA comes at a time when cybercrime has become an increasingly important area for law enforcement agencies in Pakistan. The agency is responsible for investigating various types of cyber offences and taking legal action against individuals involved in digital crimes.
The NCCIA deals with complaints related to online fraud, harassment, data breaches and other forms of cybercrime. Its responsibilities also include digital forensics and technical investigations, making the agency an important part of Pakistan’s efforts to tackle crimes committed through digital platforms.
The agency was established as the country’s central body for cybercrime investigations after replacing the cybercrime wing of the Federal Investigation Agency. It now operates through offices in different parts of Pakistan and directly receives complaints involving cyber offences.
Rizvi’s appointment is expected to bring his experience in policing and law enforcement to the agency as it continues to deal with an expanding range of digital crimes. His previous role as Islamabad Police chief involved managing security and law-and-order challenges in the capital, while his new position will focus more heavily on cyber investigations and digital crime.
The change also marks a significant shift in the federal capital’s law-enforcement leadership. With Sohail Chaudhry taking over Islamabad Police and Rizvi moving to the NCCIA, the reshuffle is expected to influence both policing operations and the country’s cybercrime investigation setup.
