NEPRA Reduces Electricity Tariff by Rs1.99 Per Unit

Electricity consumers across Pakistan are set to receive significant relief after the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) approved a reduction of Rs1.99 per unit in electricity tariffs under the quarterly adjustment mechanism.

According to a notification issued by NEPRA, the reduction has been granted on account of the quarterly tariff adjustment for the January to March 2026 period. The move is expected to provide financial relief to millions of households and businesses facing high energy costs.

The tariff reduction will remain effective for three months, from June through August 2026. The relief will apply to electricity consumers nationwide, including customers of K-Electric, ensuring that a broad segment of the population benefits from the adjustment.

NEPRA stated that the reduction is expected to provide cumulative relief of approximately Rs67.17 billion during the implementation period. The savings will be reflected in electricity bills issued over the next three months, helping consumers manage household and business expenses.

The regulator explained that the adjustment was made under the quarterly tariff review mechanism, which compares actual power sector costs with previously determined rates. Any difference between projected and actual costs is then passed on to consumers through tariff increases or reductions.

Energy sector experts say the latest cut will bring welcome relief, particularly during the summer months when electricity consumption typically rises due to increased use of cooling appliances. Lower tariffs could help reduce the financial burden on consumers already dealing with inflation and rising living costs.

The decision comes as policymakers continue efforts to balance power sector finances while protecting consumers from excessive electricity prices. Further tariff adjustments will depend on future cost reviews and developments in the country’s energy sector.
