Rare solar phenomenon expected on Day of Arafah 2026.

A rare astronomical event is expected to occur during Day of Arafah 2026, when the sun will appear directly above the Kaaba in Mecca, temporarily causing shadows to disappear in the area.

According to astronomers, the phenomenon is expected to take place on May 27, 2026, which corresponds to 9 Zil Hajj 1447 AH. At midday, the sun is predicted to align exactly above the Holy Kaaba, creating a moment when objects in Makkah will cast almost no visible shadow.

Experts explained that the event happens because of Makkah’s geographical position, located near 21.4 degrees north latitude. As the sun moves between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer during the year, it passes directly over Makkah twice annually.Scientists said the event becomes especially significant because it is coinciding with the Day of Arafah 2026, a rare alignment that was last witnessed in 1993.

Astronomers noted that this coincidence occurs approximately every 33 years due to differences between the Islamic lunar calendar and the Gregorian solar calendar.

The Saudi National Center for Meteorology clarified that the phenomenon is completely natural and should not be linked to extreme weather conditions or unusual temperature increases. Officials explained that weather intensity depends on several environmental factors, including humidity levels, cloud cover, atmospheric pressure, and wind speed rather than the solar alignment itself.

A spokesperson from the meteorology department stated that such astronomical events are regularly monitored by experts and are scientifically understood phenomena.

Authorities also advised the public to rely only on official weather updates and verified scientific sources for accurate information regarding the event.

The rare alignment has already attracted attention among astronomy enthusiasts and pilgrims because of its connection with one of the most important days in the Islamic calendar.

Experts added that while the phenomenon is visually unique, it poses no danger and is considered a normal part of Earth’s astronomical and seasonal movements.
