Flour Prices Rise in Sindh Ahead of Ramadan What You Should Know

The Sindh government has increased flour prices ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, adding to the financial burden on citizens already struggling with high inflation.

According to official notifications, the retail price of flour has risen by Rs. 8 per kilogram. The new retail rate is now Rs. 107 per kg, which makes a 10-kg flour bag cost Rs. 1,070. The ex-mill price has been set at Rs. 104 per kg, making a 10-kg ex-mill bag cost Rs. 1,040. Overall, the price of a 10-kg bag has increased by Rs. 80.

The increase was formally announced by the Commissioner of Karachi, and the revised flour prices have taken effect immediately. Officials said the adjustment reflects higher production and market costs. Shopkeepers have been urged to follow government-set rates to prevent overcharging consumers.

Despite official prices, many shopkeepers are selling flour above the government rate. Standard flour is currently being sold at Rs. 125 per kg, while Chaki flour is available at Rs. 140 per kg in various parts of the city. This discrepancy has further concerned residents.

The rise in flour prices has sparked public worry, as flour remains a staple food for households across Sindh. Families, especially those with low incomes, are finding basic items like roti increasingly unaffordable. Economists warn that the price hike may put additional strain on household budgets ahead of Ramadan.

Previously, in December 2025, the official flour price was set at Rs. 99 per kg. Authorities have struggled to enforce these rates in the market, leading to higher costs for consumers.

The Sindh government emphasized that the price increase is necessary to maintain market stability and ensure a steady supply of flour. Officials assured that measures are being taken to prevent shortages while balancing production costs and consumer protection.
