The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department has announced a public holiday for all government and private educational institutions across the province. The holiday will be observed on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, on the occasion of Chehlum (20 Safar 1448 AH).
The decision was confirmed through an official notification issued by the department on July 31, 2026. According to the notification, the holiday has been declared following the approval of the Steering Committee during its meeting held on February 12, 2026.
The announcement applies to all schools and educational institutions working under the administrative control of the School Education and Literacy Department, Government of Sindh. Both public and private institutions will remain closed for one day.
The department said the decision is part of the approved academic and administrative schedule for the current year. Schools are expected to resume their normal activities after the holiday unless any further announcement is made by the authorities.
The official notification has been shared with all relevant offices for implementation. District education authorities, education boards, and administrators of private schools have been directed to follow the instructions without delay.
Officials have also been asked to ensure that the notification reaches all educational institutions across the province. This is intended to help schools, students, teachers, and parents prepare for the temporary closure.
The holiday will be observed uniformly throughout Sindh. No separate instructions have been issued for any district or region. This means the closure will apply equally to all government and private educational institutions under the department’s control.
Chehlum is observed by many Muslims to mark the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA). Every year, various parts of Pakistan announce public holidays or make administrative arrangements to facilitate religious observances and public gatherings during this occasion.
The latest announcement gives schools enough time to notify students, teachers, and parents before the scheduled holiday. Educational institutions may also adjust lesson plans or academic activities where necessary to accommodate the one-day closure.
Parents are advised to stay updated through their respective schools for any additional instructions regarding class schedules or examinations. However, the current notification only confirms the closure of educational institutions on August 4.
