Pakistan has issued a nationwide alert over an approaching heatwave expected to impact several regions, raising serious concerns about rising electricity consumption and added pressure on the already strained power system. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has cautioned that extreme temperatures will grip Sindh, southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan, with the harsh weather conditions likely to continue until May 5.
As temperatures soar, electricity demand is expected to increase significantly, mainly due to higher usage of cooling appliances. This surge could worsen existing energy challenges and lead to intensified load shedding across affected areas. Pakistan’s power sector is already dealing with supply constraints linked to global energy disruptions, making the situation more critical during periods of extreme heat.
Officials fear that the imbalance between electricity demand and supply may result in longer and more frequent outages, further disrupting daily life and business activities. The risk of load shedding becomes particularly concerning as vulnerable populations struggle to cope with prolonged power cuts in extreme weather conditions.
Pakistan has previously experienced devastating heatwaves, including a deadly episode in 2024 that resulted in hundreds of fatalities and widespread health emergencies. Such events underline the increasing threat posed by climate change, which is contributing to more frequent and intense heatwaves across the country.
Experts warn that without effective energy management and preventive measures, the ongoing heatwave could put immense pressure on infrastructure and public health systems. Authorities have urged citizens to take precautions, reduce unnecessary electricity usage, and stay hydrated to minimize risks during the extreme weather period.
The situation highlights the urgent need for long-term solutions to address energy shortages and improve resilience against climate-driven challenges, especially as load shedding continues to remain a major concern during peak summer months.
