Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is poised to become the next Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC) following the resignation of the current chair, Greg Barclay.

The Age reported that Barclay informed ICC directors, including Cricket Australia’s chair Mike Baird, of his decision to step down during a video conference on Tuesday night. This move came after Shah expressed his interest in the role and reportedly secured enough support from ICC members to succeed Barclay in November.

An ICC spokesperson confirmed that Barclay will not seek a third term and will vacate the position at the end of November. Barclay, who was first appointed as the independent ICC chair in November 2020 and re-elected in 2022, will complete his current tenure at that time.

Nominations for the next ICC chair are due by August 27, 2024. If multiple candidates are nominated, an election will be held, with the new chair taking office from December 1, 2024.

Barclay’s decision to step down follows Shah’s backing from major cricketing boards, including those of Australia and England. If Shah is appointed, he is expected to serve a minimum of three years under the revised ICC constitution. His term as BCCI secretary is set to end next year.

Concerns remain about the future of ICC management under CEO Geoff Allardice, based in Dubai, and there are growing questions about India’s participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in Pakistan next February.
