ICC Removes Gaddafi Stadium Pitch Demerit Point

The International Cricket Council has removed a demerit point from Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. The decision follows an appeal by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

The stadium had received an “Unsatisfactory” pitch rating after the third ODI between Pakistan and Australia. The match was played on June 4.

The Pakistan Cricket Board challenged the original assessment through an appeal. The ICC then referred the matter to an appeals panel.

The panel reviewed several pieces of evidence before reaching its decision. This included match footage and the Match Referee’s report.

The panel also considered feedback from the two team captains. After reviewing the evidence, it rejected the original pitch rating.

The panel found that the pitch was not excessively uneven. It also found no excessive assistance for spin bowling.

As a result, the “Unsatisfactory” rating was overturned. Gaddafi Stadium now has zero active demerit points.

The decision is important for one of Pakistan’s major international cricket venues. It removes the penalty previously attached to the Lahore stadium.

The ICC also reviewed a separate case involving Maple Leaf Cricket Ground. The venue is located in King City, Toronto.

The ground had received an “Unsatisfactory” rating during the United States-Netherlands match. That game took place on June 8.

The appeals panel found no excessive unevenness on the pitch. It also found no excessive seam movement or spin.

The panel concluded that the surface met the required standard. It therefore overturned the one demerit point issued against the venue.

However, another penalty against the same ground remains in place. The case involved the Canada-Netherlands match on June 16.

Officials had rated that pitch “Unfit” following the match. The appeals panel reviewed the evidence linked to that assessment.

It determined that the surface was dangerous for players. The panel therefore upheld the “Unfit” rating.

The venue will retain three demerit points from that match. The decision shows that the ICC applies different penalties based on pitch conditions.

Under ICC regulations, an “Unsatisfactory” pitch receives one demerit point. An “Unfit” pitch receives three demerit points.

These demerit points remain active for five years. Venues can face restrictions after accumulating a certain number of points.

A venue cannot host international cricket for 12 months after reaching six points. Reaching 12 points results in a 24-month suspension.

The ICC’s latest decisions demonstrate the role of its appeals process. Pitch ratings can be reviewed when evidence is presented against an assessment.

For Gaddafi Stadium, the ruling removes the previous penalty completely. The Lahore venue now stands at zero demerit points.

The decision also provides clarity ahead of future international matches at the stadium. The venue will not carry the earlier demerit point.

The Pakistan Cricket Board’s successful appeal has therefore changed the stadium’s disciplinary record. The ICC’s review found insufficient grounds to maintain the original rating.

The decision was based on match footage, official reports and captain feedback. The panel concluded that the Gaddafi Stadium surface did not meet the criteria for an “Unsatisfactory” rating.

The ruling leaves Gaddafi Stadium without active demerit points. It also reinforces the importance of the ICC’s pitch assessment and review system.
