Electricity consumers could face another increase in power tariffs after the Central Power Purchasing Agency sought a higher rate from NEPRA.
The CCPA has requested an increase of Rs2.52 per unit under the July fuel price adjustment mechanism.
The request has been submitted to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority for consideration.
NEPRA has scheduled a hearing on the application for August 27.
If approved, the proposed adjustment would increase electricity costs for consumers for one month.
NEPRA will review the CCPA’s request during the scheduled hearing before making a final decision.
The regulator will determine whether the proposed increase should be passed on to electricity consumers.
According to the CCPA’s application, electricity generation costs remained high for several fuel sources during July.
The agency stated that electricity generated using diesel cost Rs50 per unit during the month.
Electricity generated from imported coal reportedly cost Rs54.47 per unit.
Meanwhile, power generated using imported liquefied natural gas cost Rs47.37 per unit, according to the application.
The CCPA linked the proposed adjustment to changes in fuel costs used for electricity generation.
The agency’s request reflects the impact of expensive fuels on the overall cost of power generation during July.
If NEPRA approves the request, consumers could see an increase in their electricity bills.
The proposed adjustment would apply for one month under the fuel price adjustment mechanism.
The final impact on electricity consumers will depend on NEPRA’s decision following the August 27 hearing.
Consumers will receive further clarity once the regulator reviews the application and announces its decision.
The proposed increase comes amid continued changes in electricity tariffs linked to fluctuations in power generation costs.
