Netflix Users are expressing frustration after the company disabled the option to cast shows from smartphones to most modern TV-streaming devices. The update, quietly released in November, affects new Chromecast and Google TV devices.
According to Netflix, “Netflix no longer supports casting shows from a mobile device to most TVs and TV-streaming devices.” As a result, users must now rely on the remote included with their TV or streaming device to navigate the platform.
The change was first reported on Reddit and later confirmed by Android Authority. Many Netflix Users expressed confusion over the sudden update. Customer support reportedly explained the decision as an effort to “improve customer experience,” stating, “If the device has its own remote, you can’t cast.”
The move highlights Netflix’s goal to standardize its interface across devices by prioritizing its native app navigation. Modern Chromecast and Google TV devices are affected, while older devices like the original Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra can still cast Netflix. These older models cannot run the Netflix app natively, which is why they remain supported.
Subscription plans also affect casting. Netflix Users on the ad-supported plan cannot use casting, even with older devices. Higher-tier subscriptions are required to retain this feature. Netflix has also published troubleshooting guidance for legacy Google Cast devices, indicating continued support for older hardware.
While the change may streamline the experience across modern devices, it has drawn criticism from Netflix Users who prefer the convenience of mobile casting. Many have taken to online forums to voice their concerns and seek alternatives.

Netflix continues to maintain that the update is intended to enhance user experience and ensure a consistent interface across all devices. Despite the frustration, subscribers must now adjust to remote-based navigation on newer hardware.
