WhatsApp is bringing a fresh twist to its status updates with a new Instagram-style Notes feature branded as “About.” The revamped About update allows users to post short text snippets that appear at the top of one-on-one chats and on their profile, very much like Instagram Notes.
By default, these About notes are ephemeral and automatically expire after 24 hours, but users can tweak the timer to disappear sooner or linger longer. You also have control over visibility: you can show your note to all contacts, selected ones, or limit who sees it.
WhatsApp says this isn’t entirely new; it’s actually a revival of one of its first features. Before secure messaging became its core, WhatsApp allowed quick status updates, and this new About brings that spirit back in a more modern, social way. Contacts can tap on your About note from inside a chat to reply directly, making it feel like a lightweight conversation starter.
Currently, the About feature supports only text, unlike Instagram Notes, which also supports looping video and music. But WhatsApp hints richer formats could be added later if the feature becomes popular.
Interestingly, WhatsApp’s decision to improve the About status coincides with another update that fixes a major user issue. In a related update, the platform addressed a nagging problem affecting many users.
The new Notes-style About status is currently rolling out globally to mobile users, so make sure your WhatsApp app is up to date to try it as soon as it’s available.
