Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has stated that Pakistan is willing to engage in dialogue with the Afghan Taliban regime on reasonable and peaceful terms, stressing that the next step now lies with the authorities in Kabul. His statement came as both sides continue to observe a 48-hour temporary ceasefire, aimed at de-escalating border tensions and restoring stability in the region.
The Prime Minister, addressing the media on Thursday, said that Pakistan has always advocated for peace and regional cooperation. He added that Islamabad’s primary focus is to ensure the safety of its citizens and maintain strong, stable relations with Afghanistan.
“The ball is now in the Afghan Taliban’s court,” said Shehbaz Sharif. “Pakistan has shown goodwill by adhering to the ceasefire and remains open to talks under mutually acceptable conditions.”
Government officials revealed that intelligence-sharing and border coordination mechanisms are being reviewed to prevent future incidents. The Prime Minister noted that Pakistan will continue to pursue peace through dialogue but will not compromise on its national security interests.
Diplomatic sources said that the 48-hour ceasefire offers a critical opportunity to ease hostilities and establish a framework for long-term peace. Analysts believe that while the truce is temporary, it signals a willingness on both sides to address ongoing issues through communication rather than conflict.
Observers also point out that the recent ceasefire could open the door to renewed regional diplomacy. A permanent agreement, if achieved, would strengthen border security and boost trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid growing international calls for regional stability and cooperation, particularly as Afghanistan continues to face internal and external challenges.
This approach aligns with PM Shehbaz’s broader policy of prioritizing dialogue over confrontation. Earlier, the Prime Minister also extended support and goodwill to domestic political figures such as KP CM Sohail Afridi, whom he congratulated upon taking office reflecting his continued emphasis on unity and cooperation at both national and regional levels.
As Pakistan looks toward maintaining peace along its western border, all eyes are now on Kabul’s response. The coming days will reveal whether the temporary ceasefire can evolve into a permanent peace arrangement one that serves the interests of both nations and ensures long-term stability across the region.
