Govt Approves Rs 10.8B Package To Waive Electricity Bills For Flood Victims

The Govt has approved a Rs. 10.8 billion ($39 million) relief package to ease the financial burden on electricity consumers in flood-affected areas. The move comes after devastating floods hit Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in August and September 2025. Heavy monsoon rains and glacial melt caused widespread damage, leaving many families without homes, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure.

Under the relief package, domestic electricity consumers in officially declared flood-hit regions will have their August 2025 bills completely waived. Those who have already paid will receive refunds in upcoming billing cycles. The Govt clarified that the measure aims to support households struggling to recover from the disaster.

Commercial, industrial, and agricultural consumers will not receive a full waiver. Instead, they can defer their August electricity bills. The repayments will be spread evenly over seven months, from December 2025 to June 2026. Officials said this arrangement will provide businesses and farmers with financial breathing space during the recovery period.

To fund the initiative, the Govt released Rs. 10.8 billion as an advance subsidy to the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA-G). Of this, Rs. 10.4 billion is allocated for domestic bill waivers, while Rs. 464 million will cover the cost of deferred payments for commercial and industrial consumers.

Authorities emphasized that the relief package is part of broader efforts to assist flood-affected communities. By waiving bills and allowing payment deferrals, the Govt aims to support families and businesses as the country rebuilds infrastructure and restores livelihoods.

The initiative reflects the Govt’s commitment to disaster relief and highlights the importance of timely financial support in areas impacted by natural calamities.
