Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed organizers of religious gatherings to immediately download and activate QR-coded panic buttons at 4,700 Imambargahs across the province as part of the Muharram security plan.
During a high-level briefing on Muharram arrangements, officials informed the chief minister that this QR-based panic system is being introduced in Punjab for the first time. Once scanned, the QR code will instantly alert relevant security and administrative agencies for a rapid emergency response.
Authorities briefed that a total of 47,280 religious gatherings and processions will be held across the province, including 37,868 majalis and 9,412 processions during Muharram. The scale of arrangements highlights the extensive security planning underway for the holy month.
To manage security, more than 125,000 police personnel will be deployed across Punjab. In addition, 61 companies of the Pakistan Army and 76 companies of the Rangers have been requisitioned to support law enforcement agencies in maintaining order.
Officials also confirmed that 30,445 trained volunteers will assist security forces during processions and gatherings. The briefing further stated that drones will not be allowed, and strict action will be taken against unlawful use of loudspeakers during Muharram.
The Punjab government will also provide cold and sweet drinking water stalls for mourners, while fragrance will be used along procession routes. Meanwhile, the Punjab Safe Cities Authority will monitor processions live through 5,623 CCTV cameras, along with body cams and advanced 4G surveillance systems deployed at sensitive locations.
