Nearly 400 Dead as Monsoon Floods Devastate KP, GB, and Kashmir

Torrential rains and flash floods have wreaked havoc across northern Pakistan, leaving nearly 400 people dead and hundreds more injured.

Raging rivers, landslides, and collapsed roads have destroyed villages, bridges, and homes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir. In GB, glacial streams turned into deadly torrents, sweeping away residents in Chilas and toppling five bridges in Skardu.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has suffered the worst damage, with PDMA confirming 307 deaths in just 48 hours. Swat, Buner, Bajaur, Mansehra, Shangla, and Battagram remain devastated, as 74 homes were destroyed. The provincial government has allocated Rs500 million for relief, prioritizing the hardest-hit Buner district.

In Azad Kashmir, over 700 tourists stranded near Ratti Gali Lake were rescued after floods washed away a 1.5 km road. Authorities, with support from the army and police, managed to safely evacuate all visitors and vehicles.

Buner emerged as the epicenter, where flash floods and a cloudburst killed 184 people, drowning entire villages, markets, and even a police station. Hospitals are overwhelmed, while locals and the army continue rescue efforts.

Battagram also reported heavy losses, with 14 bodies recovered from the Nandhyar River and seven still missing. NDMA has warned of more rains from August 18–22, raising fears of worsening destruction.

Condolences and aid pledges have poured in from Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Iran, Kuwait, Russia, and Australia
