Gunmen stormed a courthouse in Zahedan, the capital of Iran’s southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province, on Friday. Iranian media reported the incident was carried out by the Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl.
The semi-official Fars News Agency stated that gunfire and explosions were heard during the attack. It also said that the assailants may have included a suicide bomber. The courthouse compound was heavily targeted in the assault.
The militant group, which is based in Iran’s Baluchistan region, claimed responsibility for the attack. Jaish al-Adl is known for past attacks against Iranian security forces and government buildings.
According to Mehr News Agency, several people were injured and taken to nearby hospitals. The Baluch human rights group HAALVSH, citing eyewitnesses, said multiple judiciary staff and security officers were either killed or wounded. The attackers reportedly forced their way into the judges’ chambers.
Sistan-Baluchestan province is located near Iran’s borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is home to the Baluch Sunni minority, a group that has long expressed frustration over political and economic exclusion. Many residents say they are treated unfairly compared to the Shia majority.
The area is frequently hit by violence. Armed clashes often break out between government forces and militant groups. Some of these groups demand greater rights and regional autonomy. Tehran, however, accuses them of being linked to foreign intelligence agencies and involved in smuggling and terrorism.
The courthouse attacked in Iran Baluchistan highlights ongoing instability in the region. Authorities are yet to confirm the full extent of casualties or arrests.
