NEPRA Approves Rs6.62kWh Relief for K-Electric Consumers in May Bills

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a significant fuel charges adjustment (FCA) relief of Rs6.6195 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for K-Electric (KE) consumers for February 2025. This negative adjustment will be reflected in electricity bills for May 2025, offering substantial financial relief to eligible consumers.

The downward revision follows NEPRA’s detailed scrutiny of KE’s February FCA request, during which discrepancies were found in fuel cost components. Adjustments were made for electricity purchased from CPPA-G and FPCL, resulting in a total consumer relief of approximately Rs6.664 billion.

The authority has provisionally withheld Rs3 billion from KE’s broader claims related to partial load operations, start-up costs, and other efficiency metrics, aligning with NEPRA’s generation tariff framework for 2023–30. This ensures unresolved costs aren’t unfairly passed on to consumers.

The negative FCA will apply to all KE consumer categories except lifeline users, domestic protected users, Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS), and those on prepaid tariffs. KE will also adjust bills already issued in May by applying the relief in upcoming billing cycles.

KE’s larger pending claim of Rs13.9 billion for the July 2023 to February 2025 period remains under review. NEPRA has already accounted for Rs9.4 billion and will evaluate the remaining Rs4.5 billion separately to ensure consumer tariffs remain stable.
