Security Boosted at MCG After Men Caught with Firearms During AFL Match
Security protocols at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) are being tightened after a serious breach occurred during an Australian Rules football match on Thursday. Two men, aged 21 and 27, were found in possession of firearms during the high-attendance game between Collingwood and Carlton, which drew over 82,000 fans.
The pair were arrested after refusing to leave the stadium due to disruptive behavior. Police later confirmed both were on bail at the time and have now been charged with firearm possession and other related offences. They were remanded in custody to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.

Authorities admitted that although the weapons were initially detected by screening units at the entrance, security staff failed to perform a comprehensive secondary check. MCG CEO Stuart Fox described the oversight as “disappointing” and announced enhanced manual checks for future events. “Fans may experience minor delays as we increase the extensiveness of our security processes,” he said.
The AFL has responded firmly, with CEO Andrew Dillon condemning the incident as “extremely disappointing.” He confirmed that the two individuals would receive lifetime bans from attending AFL matches. “Over 1.2 million fans have attended games this season, and we’re committed to maintaining their safety,” Dillon emphasized.
The MCG will now work in closer collaboration with Victoria Police, the AFL, and private security teams to reinforce stadium security and ensure public safety remains a top priority.
