Pakistan’s meteorological department has issued a warning about heavy rainfall expected across the country from March 9, 2025. A series of western winds will bring significant weather changes, increasing the risk of urban flooding in major cities such as Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar. The system is forecasted to remain active until March 16, 2025, with widespread rain affecting multiple regions.
Heavy Rainfall and Flooding Threat
Areas including Chitral, Murree, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir are expected to receive heavy rainfall between March 9 and March 16. On March 10, rain is predicted in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Peshawar, Charsadda, and Mardan, while Punjab is likely to experience significant rainfall from March 12 to March 16, raising concerns about urban flooding.

Risk of Urban Flooding and Landslides
Authorities have warned that heavy rainfall may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of major cities, particularly Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, and Quetta, due to inadequate drainage systems. Flash floods could develop quickly, prompting officials to urge residents to take precautions. Additionally, heavy snowfall in mountainous areas may lead to road blockages and travel disruptions. The department has also warned of possible landslides in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, advising travelers, tourists, and fishermen to remain cautious.
Rising Water Levels and Reservoir Concerns
Pakistan’s key reservoirs, including Tarbela and Mangla Dams, are nearing their dead-level thresholds, raising fears of water overflow. The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has cautioned provincial authorities about potential flooding risks in low-lying areas.
As the country prepares for this intense weather system, residents are urged to stay updated with official weather alerts and take necessary safety measures.
