Maha Kumbh 2025 Begins in Prayagraj: World’s Largest Religious Gathering Returns After 144 Years
The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 officially began on Monday in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, marking the grand return of the world’s largest religious congregation after a gap of 144 years. Devotees from across the globe gathered at the ghats of Prayagraj to take part in the first Shahi Snan on the auspicious occasion of Pauh Purnima.
A Sacred Confluence of Faith
Thousands of pilgrims flocked to the Triveni Sangam, the holy confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythological Saraswati rivers, to bathe in the waters. Devotees believe that taking a dip in these sacred waters will cleanse their sins and lead to moksha (spiritual salvation). According to government reports, by 8 am, over 40 lakh pilgrims had already bathed at the confluence.

Unprecedented Pilgrim Turnout
The 45-day event, which is expected to last until March 2025, is set to attract over 45 crore devotees, including 15 lakh international visitors. This is a massive increase compared to the previous Kumbh Mela in 2019, which saw 24 crore attendees.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise the Maha Kumbh for embodying India’s rich spiritual heritage and cultural unity. In his post, he expressed his heartfelt wishes for the success of the event, calling it a momentous occasion for millions of people who hold Bharatiya values and culture close to their hearts. He also emphasized the confluence of faith, devotion, and culture during the event.
Massive Arrangements and Investments
The Uttar Pradesh government has set aside a whopping Rs 7,000 crore to ensure the smooth conduct of the Maha Kumbh Mela. Manoj Kumar Singh, Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary, said that preparations have been ramped up to accommodate the projected 45 crore pilgrims. Efforts are focused on ensuring sanitation, security, and the introduction of a ‘digital Kumbh’.
Advanced Safety and Security Measures
In a bid to ensure the safety of the massive crowd, cutting-edge technology is being employed. For the first time, underwater drones and AI-enabled surveillance cameras are being deployed to monitor the pilgrims. Additionally, 700 flagged boats with teams from the PAC, NDRF, and SDRF are stationed to provide life-saving assistance.
A Fusion of Culture and Technology
The Maha Kumbh is also witnessing an unprecedented fusion of spirituality and technology. Advanced tech tools, including drones, are enhancing safety and surveillance throughout the event. On the cultural front, the Culture Ministry has organized a rich array of performances by renowned artists like Kailash Kher, Shankar Mahadevan, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Mohit Chauhan, Hans Raj Hans, and Hariharan. A dedicated cultural hub, Kalagram, has also been set up to showcase India’s vibrant cultural heritage.
