Sharp Rise in Book Prices Due to Paper Cost Hike
A 35% increase in paper prices over the past month has led to a sharp surge in the cost of books, making education increasingly unaffordable for many families.
As a result of the higher paper costs, book prices have doubled or even tripled, putting a strain on household budgets. One concerned parent shared, “My daughter studies in 9th grade, and my son is in 5th. The cost of their books now exceeds my budget. Rates have doubled or tripled, and a poor man cannot afford their fees and books.”

Booksellers also expressed frustration with the price hikes. A shopkeeper explained, “Books that used to cost Rs30 are now priced at Rs400. A book that was Rs200 last week is now Rs300 or Rs400 this week. The surge is unbearable for many.”
Parents are urging the government to stabilize paper prices to ensure that education remains accessible for all, especially for families struggling with the rising costs of schooling.
