15% Heart Attacks in Karachi Now Affect Under-40s

Karachi is increasingly being referred to as a city of heart patients, with a growing number of young individuals falling victim to heart attacks. Medical experts have expressed concern over the rising trend, warning that unhealthy lifestyles are putting younger generations at serious risk.

According to health professionals, heart attacks among people under the age of 40 now account for approximately 15 percent of all cases. Factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, poor dietary habits, smoking, stress, and a lack of physical activity are being identified as the primary causes behind this alarming increase.

The number of cardiac patients in Karachi has reached a worrying level. Data from major healthcare facilities shows that the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) receives between 50 and 60 heart attack cases daily. Meanwhile, Civil Hospital reports around five cases per day, while private hospitals collectively record more than 30 cases daily.

Dr. Tahir Sagheer, head of NICVD, stated that 15 to 20 percent of heart attack patients are under the age of 40. He further revealed that many individuals do not survive long enough to reach a hospital, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Cardiologist Dr. Salim Virani emphasized the importance of preventive measures, including maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, avoiding tobacco products, and undergoing routine medical check-ups. He stressed that early prevention remains the most effective defense against heart disease.

Health experts have warned that unless young people make significant changes to their daily habits, heart disease could evolve into a major social and public health crisis in the coming years.
