[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]A Pakistani peacekeeper was killed, and two officers were injured in Abyei, a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The incident occurred on January 28 when a convoy of Pakistani peacekeepers came under attack while escorting two local patients to a hospital. The peacekeepers effectively responded to the militants, forcing them to retreat. However, during the exchange of fire, Sepoy Muhammad Tariq, a resident of Badin, Sindh, was martyred, and two officers were injured.

This tragic incident highlights the risks and challenges faced by peacekeepers in conflict zones. Pakistan, as a responsible member of the international community, remains committed to contributing to global peace and stability under the United Nations. It is noteworthy that a total of 181 Pakistani peacekeepers have lost their lives in the line of duty while serving the cause of peace worldwide.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his deepest condolences to the government and people of Ghana and Pakistan, as well as the families of the deceased peacekeeper. The incident in Abyei is part of broader clashes between rival communities in the disputed region, resulting in 54 casualties, including two UN peacekeepers, according to the UN’s latest report.

This unfortunate event underscores the significant sacrifices made by peacekeeping forces globally in their efforts to maintain peace and security. As conflicts persist in various regions, the dedication of peacekeepers becomes increasingly vital. The international community recognizes and honors the contributions made by countries like Pakistan in promoting peacekeeping missions worldwide.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
