PTI Drops Contempt Case Against Election Commission Of Pakistan

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]In a bold and defiant statement on Monday, Sardar Latif Khosa, a prominent leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), conveyed that the party would prioritize the court of public opinion over judicial orders that compromise democratic principles. This firm stance comes in response to the Supreme Court’s recent decision on January 13 to strip PTI of its iconic electoral symbol, the “bat,” just weeks before the impending general elections.

During a media interaction, Khosa announced the withdrawal of PTI’s petition seeking contempt proceedings against the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The petition alleged biases in creating a level playing field for the elections, but Khosa questioned the possibility of such a field now, given the recent developments.

Khosa expressed his discontent over the perceived suppression of PTI leaders, their arrests on what he claimed were false charges, and obstacles encountered while submitting nomination papers. He criticized the court’s decision, asserting that it not only deprived the party of reserved seats but also hindered their ability to hold public meetings or workers’ conventions in any district.

Despite raising these concerns in the Supreme Court, Khosa expressed skepticism, stating, “All this unfolded and was on televisions, but judges claim they don’t watch TV.” He also highlighted the arrest of his son, mentioning the police’s denial of any wrongdoing.

Addressing the controversy surrounding PTI election candidates contesting on PTI-Nazriati tickets, Khosa disclosed an initial agreement with PTI-Nazriati Chairman Akhtar Iqbal Dar for seven seats. However, following Dar’s alleged abduction, public claims of forged signatures emerged, leading to a breakdown in the agreement.

Expressing distrust in the ECP and disappointment with the Supreme Court’s decision, Khosa declared the party’s shift to the “people’s court,” emphasizing their trust in the public over judicial orders. This statement reflects a strategic move by PTI to leverage public sentiment and opinion as they navigate the challenges and setbacks in the lead-up to the upcoming general elections.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
