WhatsApp has started rolling out four major new features to users worldwide, with the biggest update allowing people to create and use a WhatsApp account directly on an iPad. The latest improvements are designed to make the messaging platform more convenient across tablets, vehicles and media sharing.
The most notable feature allows users to register a brand-new WhatsApp account directly on an iPad. Until now, iPad users were required to link the app to an existing WhatsApp account on a smartphone. With the new update, users can now set up, verify and operate their WhatsApp account entirely on the tablet without needing to own or connect a mobile phone.
The upgrade significantly enhances the iPad experience following the launch of WhatsApp’s dedicated iPad application last year. The standalone account support is expected to make the app more useful for users who primarily rely on tablets for communication.
WhatsApp has also expanded its compatibility with vehicle infotainment systems. The updated integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto now allows drivers to have incoming messages read aloud and send voice replies without taking their hands off the steering wheel. Users can also place calls, view recent call history and access favourite contacts directly through their vehicle’s display.
Another new feature improves how documents are handled within the messaging app. PDF files can now be opened instantly inside WhatsApp without first downloading them to the device. Users can also perform simple edits, including highlighting text and adding annotations, making it easier to review and share documents while staying inside the app.
Music sharing has also received an upgrade. Subscribers to Spotify and Apple Music can now share the songs they are currently listening to directly to their WhatsApp Status. The feature allows users to post music using the built-in sharing options available in both streaming applications, making it easier to share favourite tracks with friends and contacts.
Meta said the four new features are being rolled out gradually to WhatsApp users around the world. As with most major updates, the new tools may take some time to become available on all devices, depending on the user’s region and app version.
The latest improvements reflect WhatsApp’s continued focus on expanding its platform beyond traditional messaging by adding new productivity, entertainment and cross-device features for its global user base.
