[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]After four years of being under house confinement, Indian authorities have released prominent Muslim cleric Mirwaiz Mohammad Umar Farooq. They allowed him to lead Friday prayers in Srinagar, the capital of Indian-administered Kashmir.

As he delivered his sermon from the pulpit of Srinagar’s iconic mosque, Mirwaiz, who is 50 years old, shed tears. Many others in the congregation also became emotional as he delivered his first Friday sermon as a free man after four years of house arrest.

Mirwaiz has been a leader of protests against Indian authorities in the disputed region. He was detained ahead of India’s revocation of Kashmir’s special status in 2019, which led to political upheaval in the Himalayan area.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
