The government has removed a key regulatory requirement for small rooftop solar installations by allowing electricity distribution companies (Discos) to directly approve grid-connected solar systems of up to 25 kilowatts.
Under the revised Solar Regulations 2026, consumers installing rooftop solar systems with a generation capacity of up to 25 kW will no longer need prior approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra).
The regulator has officially amended the rules and issued a notification authorizing Discos to process and approve eligible rooftop solar applications directly, significantly simplifying the approval process for households and small businesses.
Previously, consumers had to obtain separate approval from Nepra before connecting their solar systems to the national grid. The revised framework removes that requirement, with all applications now to be submitted directly to the relevant electricity distribution company.
Officials said the move is aimed at reducing regulatory delays, improving efficiency, and encouraging faster adoption of rooftop solar energy across the country.
The simplified process is expected to benefit homeowners and small commercial consumers by making grid-connected solar installations quicker and more accessible.
The latest changes come as Pakistan continues to promote renewable energy and expand the use of rooftop solar systems to reduce pressure on the national electricity grid and lower energy costs for consumers.
