Italy has temporarily suspended its Schengen travel arrangement with Spain following the recent migrant surge into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Italian officials said the measure was necessary to protect national security and strengthen border management during the ongoing situation.
According to Italy, the decision is temporary and is intended to address concerns over irregular migration through Ceuta, which is located on the Moroccan coast. The government said the move aims to safeguard citizens while supporting stronger control of the European Union’s external borders.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said effective border management is a shared responsibility among European Union member states. He added that uncontrolled migration could increase security risks if not managed properly.
Border Checks Reintroduced
The temporary measure means Italy will carry out selective border checks on non-EU nationals arriving from Spain by air or sea.
The suspension does not amount to a complete closure of travel between the two countries. Spanish citizens and other European Union citizens can still travel, although additional checks may apply in some cases.
Italian authorities also said they are coordinating with France to strengthen controls along the Franco-Italian border as part of wider efforts to monitor migration movements.
