Lahore Metro Starts Women-only Buses for Safer Travel

The Lahore Metro Bus Service has introduced five dedicated buses for women to improve safety, comfort, and convenience for female commuters across the city.

According to the Transport and Mass Transit Department, five Speedo buses have been temporarily deployed on the Metro Bus route and will operate exclusively for female passengers. The initiative aims to provide women with a more secure and comfortable travel experience, particularly during busy commuting hours.

Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said the decision was taken on the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. He explained that the additional buses are intended to ease overcrowding and reduce the risk of harassment faced by women while using public transport during peak hours.

The minister said the government is committed to improving public transportation for women and ensuring they can travel safely. He added that the current arrangement is temporary and that the Punjab government plans to purchase new Metro buses in the near future to permanently introduce women-only bus services.

Bilal Akbar Khan also assured that more initiatives will be introduced to strengthen public transport facilities and make commuting more convenient for female passengers throughout the province.

The Lahore Metro Bus Service is one of the city’s major public transport systems, offering affordable and efficient travel to thousands of passengers every day. Operating on a dedicated corridor, the service stretches approximately 27 kilometres from Gajju Matta in southern Lahore to Shahdara in the north, connecting several important commercial and residential areas.

Since its launch, the Metro Bus has played a significant role in reducing traffic congestion and providing a reliable alternative to conventional public transport. The system serves students, office workers, families, and daily commuters by offering faster travel through dedicated bus lanes and modern stations.

Officials believe the introduction of dedicated buses for women will further enhance passenger safety and encourage more women to use public transport with confidence. The government says the initiative reflects its broader commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive, and better-organized public transportation network in Lahore while continuing efforts to improve the quality of urban mobility across the city.
