Babar Azam Set to Become Pakistan's Test Captain Again

Babar Azam is expected to be appointed as Pakistan’s new Test captain, according to media reports citing informed sources. An official announcement is likely to be made soon by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as preparations continue for the national team’s upcoming overseas assignments.

The PCB’s selection committee is scheduled to meet in Lahore, where it is expected to confirm the new Test captain and announce the squad for Pakistan’s two-match Test series against the West Indies. However, the squad for the subsequent Test tour of England is likely to be unveiled at a later stage.

Pakistan’s tour of the Caribbean will feature two Test matches before the team travels to England for a three-match Test series. The first Test against the West Indies is set to begin on July 25 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago.

The upcoming series is significant for several reasons. It will be the first-ever men’s Test match hosted at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, marking a historic moment for the venue. Cricket West Indies said hosting the match aligns with its long-term strategy of expanding international cricket across the Caribbean while promoting fan engagement and the development of the sport throughout the region.

The series also carries added importance as part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. Both Pakistan and the West Indies will be looking to earn valuable points to strengthen their positions in the championship standings.

Pakistan heads into the series under pressure following a disappointing 2-0 Test series defeat to Bangladesh earlier this month. The result raised fresh questions about the team’s performance in red-ball cricket and highlighted the need for improvement as the side continues its rebuilding process in the longest format of the game.

If appointed, Babar Azam will be tasked with leading Pakistan through an important phase in Test cricket, beginning with the challenging Caribbean tour.
