Punjab Imposes Section 144 during First Ten Muharram Days

The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province from 1st Muharram to 10th Muharram-ul-Haram as part of a detailed security strategy aimed at maintaining peace, protecting citizens, and promoting religious harmony during the holy month.

According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, several precautionary measures and restrictions will remain in place throughout Muharram to ensure the safe and peaceful conduct of religious processions and gatherings.

The orders state that no new rituals, traditions, or practices will be permitted in Muharram processions or majalis. Authorities have also banned the public display of weapons, firearms, explosives, or any other hazardous items unless prior permission has been obtained from the relevant authorities.

To prevent sectarian tensions and maintain public order, the government has prohibited the use of provocative slogans, speeches, gestures, or activities that may offend religious sentiments or create divisions among communities. Officials warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone spreading religious, ethnic, or sectarian hatred through social media platforms or other means.

As part of additional security arrangements, residents have been barred from constructing bunkers or fortified positions on rooftops located along procession routes. Citizens have also been instructed not to keep stones, bricks, glass bottles, garbage, or similar objects on rooftops that could pose a threat to public safety or be used to disrupt religious events.

The notification further prohibits people from gathering on rooftops and shopfront platforms situated along procession routes during the movement of Muharram processions.

To strengthen security on Ashura, the Punjab government has announced a ban on motorcycle pillion riding on 9th and 10th Muharram. However, women, senior citizens, and law enforcement personnel will be exempt from this restriction.

Officials said these measures are intended to preserve law and order, ensure public safety, and encourage inter-sect unity during Muharram. Authorities have also been directed to launch awareness campaigns through print, electronic, and digital media to inform citizens about the restrictions.
