As Muharram approaches, Punjab authorities have moved to strengthen security arrangements across the province by requesting the deployment of Pakistan Army and Rangers personnel to ensure peaceful observance of religious gatherings and processions.
The Punjab Home Department has formally approached the Federal Ministry of Interior, seeking a total of 137 companies of security forces for Muharram duties. This includes 61 companies of the Pakistan Army and 76 companies of Rangers, reflecting the scale of the security plan being prepared for the sensitive religious period.
According to officials, the request has been made on the recommendation of Punjab Police, which has developed a comprehensive security strategy for Muharram processions, majalis, and other gatherings. Law enforcement agencies aim to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain peace throughout the province.
Sources said the deployment has been requested for 39 districts across Punjab, where large processions and public gatherings are expected. Security concerns typically increase during Muharram, requiring heightened vigilance and coordination between multiple agencies.
Authorities stated that the additional deployment will support local police in managing crowds, monitoring sensitive areas, and responding quickly to any potential security threats. The objective is to ensure a safe environment for participants while maintaining uninterrupted religious observances.
Officials added that the federal government will now review the request and finalize deployment arrangements ahead of Muharram. The move highlights the government’s focus on maintaining law and order during one of the most significant religious months in the country, when millions of people participate in processions and gatherings across Punjab.
